‘We HAVE to do it’ Trump says NO BACKING DOWN on Israeli embassy move to Jerusalem

Mr Trump today vowed to ignore critics who claimed “we can’t do this” and will instead go ahead with the controversial embassy move this spring.

Palestinians have already argued the move is “unacceptable” due to the fact Israel and Palestine both claim the city as their capital.

And to add fuel to the fire, the planned opening date coincides with Israel’s proclamation of independence in 1948.

Earlier today Mr Trump said he would not listen to critics of the move.

He said at CPAC: “I put the word out that I may do it. I was hit by more countries and more pressure and more people calling, begging me ‘Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t do it’.

“I said ‘we have to do it’. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the right thing to do, we have to do it. And I did it.”

US Vice President Mike Pence told the Israeli Parliament last month that a US embassy to Israel will open in Jerusalem before the end of next year.

This came after Mr Trump announced in December the US now recognises Jerusalem as the country’s capital.

He used a speech at the White House to say the move was a “recognition of reality and the right thing to do”.

He then ordered the State Department to start looking for a site for an embassy in the city.

Mr Trump’s comments today were met with fury by Palestine.

Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, said: “This is an unacceptable step. Any unilateral move will not give legitimacy to anyone and will be an obstacle to any effort to create peace in the region.”

And thousands of Palestinians have flooded the streets of Gaza and the occupied West Bank in days-long protest action against Mr Trump’s declaration.

Demonstrators chanted “death to America, death to Israel, and death to Trump”.

Militants fired rockets into Israel, drawing strikes in return from Israeli tanks and aircraft.

Mr Trump’s announcement was slammed by world leaders, with the Tunisian Labour union UGTT branding it a “declaration of war”.

Hamas, a fundamentalist group that governs the Gaza Strip, called for Muslim countries to “cut off economic and political ties with the US embassy and expel American ambassadors to cripple” the move.

Turkey’s foreign ministry condemned the move and warned that President Trump’s decision will “open the gates of hell”.

The US leader was warned by Western and Arab allies ahead of his announcement that the move could threaten instability in the region.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said there was no alternative to a two-state solution.

Jerusalem straddles the border between Israel and the West Bank. It is home to both Jewish and Islamic holy sites.

Israel holds Jerusalem to be its indivisible capital, while Palestinians want the city’s eastern sector to be their capital in an independent Palestine state.

Most countries regard the status of Jerusalem to be a matter to be solved in an eventual Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

The fact is area is disputed is why every US president since Israel’s founding has located the US embassy in Tel Aviv.
