MEPs rip into European Union’s over-reliance on Berlin – ‘When Germany stops the EU stops’

Germany has been without an official government since September with German Chancellor Angela Merkel struggling to strike a coalition deal with her competition.

Ms Merkel has eventually managed to reach an agreement with her conservatives and the Social Democrats, which still leaves all parities involved to approve before she can form a new government.

The coalition’s dawn up agreement includes big plans for the European Union, according to the Chancellor, as she addressed the European Parliament before a meeting of the EU27 on Friday.

However, some across Brussels are less than enthusiastic about the plans with them yet to be formally agreed by all parties.

Co-chair of the European Greens Philippe Lamberts bemoaned the EU grinding to a relative standstill while Germany is without real leadership.

He told DW: “When Germany stops talking and stops leading a big gap emerges in issues, such as eurozone reforms, economic policies and migration security issues.

“France wants to negotiate with Germany, but can’t – that really is a big problem.”

Sophie In ’t Veld, a Dutch MEP, highlighted the inaction from Germany harming the EU’s budgetary negotiations, which are make or break for the bloc with Brexit on the horizon.

She said: “We’re already working on formulating our wishes, our proposals, taking a position on the seven-year budget.

“We should finalise the process because of the end of term of the European Parliament.”

But it’s not only politicians who are critical of Germany’s EU influence, customers in a restaurant on the doorstep of the European Commission agree.

One man said: “You have to admit without Germany there is little progress.”

Germany’s lack of government may not be the only thing to upset EU members. Chancellor Merkel has urged the EU to give more regional aid to countries hosting a large number of migrants.

This would mean poorer countries in eastern and central Europe – such as Hungary and Poland – who have rejected the bloc’s migrant quotas would lose out.
