Man Utd news: Chris Smalling gives brutal assessment after Sevilla draw

Manchester United only registered one shot on target as they were forced to defend for majority of their Champions League first leg clash.

United had goalkeeper David De Gea to thank for keeping the clean sheet as he made a stunning one-handed save to deny Luis Muriel in the first half.

Joaquin Correa and Steven N’Zonzi also went close but they could not find a way past the resilient Spaniard.

And Smalling thinks the atmosphere during the match made it difficult for his side as they were forced to defend deep.

“It opened up in the second half,” Smalling told BT Sport.

“Bar the five minutes at the end of the first half, they didn’t have clear-cut chances.

“It’s in our hands at home. We have to win at home to go through.

“The atmosphere was very loud and emotional here and we had to dig in at times.

“They tired in the last 20 mins and we tries to pressure them. It was open in the second half.”

United now need to beat Sevilla in the second leg to progress to the quarter-finals.
