Indonesia volcano latest: Mount Sinabung eruption holiday chaos as scary WARNING issued

The country has raised flight warnings to the highest level around Mount Sinabung as the devastating ash covered the sky.

Horrifying clouds reached as high as 4.4 miles (seven kilometres) in the air.

Photos emerged of the chilling plumes that show the size and scale of the threat.

Indonesia also issued a red warning to its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (Vona).

The city of Medan is home to Kualanamu international airport that is 75 kilometres from Mount Sinabung.

Sinabung’s regular activity prompted a no-fly warning around areas of its crater years ago.

Volcanic ash contains tiny shards of glass, gases and crushed rocks that can severely damage a plane in mid-air.

Volcanologist Janine Krippner emphasised the importance of the nine Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres posted across the globe that monitor escalating situations.

She declared: “Ash plumes can travel thousands of kilometres away from the volcano itself.

“So being able to track the ash clouds in real time, to divert the planes around, is so, so important.”

However, the volcanologist added that planes could fly through dangerous ash without being warned as not all volcanos are monitored.

She continued: “If I’m in a plane and I start to smell sulphur, what am I going to do?

“There are so many volcanoes that could produce an ash plume, at any time.”

Spine-chilling footage emerged on Monday of Mount Sinabung’s horrific eruption that annihilated its summit.

Although Sinabung has driven fear into many, there are actually 147 volcanoes spread over Indonesia’s archipelago of 13,000 Pacific islands.

Out of the shockingly high number, 120 are currently active and three are in a state of eruption.

The volatile chain of volcanoes covers an area of a similar distance to the continental United States, according to Volcano Discovery.

All of these characteristics make Indonesia the most active region for volcanoes in the world.
