But it was during the second run which saw Totsuka suffer a gut-wrenching crash which immediately silenced the crowd.
The 16-year-old went up high on the pipe but went too far over the edge and came crashing down on the lip, smacking to the ground and falling in a heap.
Paramedics rushed to his aid and, despite Totsuka being in clear pain, he was able to sit up as they treated him.
The Japanese snowboarder was then loaded onto a snowmobile to be taken off the track to receive further testing.

He slumped to his knees when the final score from the judges was announced and was crowed the Winter Olympic champion once again.
A representative from the Japanese team later indicated Totsuka did not suffer any serious damage in his crash.
But he has been transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure to assess his injuries.
