When Phil Lord and CHris Miller were shocking dropped from the Anthology movie, the subtext was that they had been taking it in a direction that was a little too experimental for the franchise.
Even so, the latest reports on the movie claim it is the most “Off-kilter, weird and surprising” Star Wars film ever made.
Lucasfilm and Disney continue to back Rian Johnson’s controversial new tone and direction in The Last Jedi and it seems Solo: A Star Wars Story will follow suit.

The movie’s legendary writers have explained what inspired them and how they see the latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

Father and son screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan have revealed the surprsing films and books that inspired their take on the iconic space smuggler and hero.
Jon said: “[The Solo movie] has that flavor of a crime world that has weirdness and surprise and people stumbling into things — and other people very intentionally getting into [trouble]. The Big Lebowski is a great example because Solo has a more off-kilter tone than you’ve ever seen in [Star Wars].”
Many of their references centre on the relationship between Aleden Ehrenreich’s young Han and Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett.
Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Western Unforgiven was one such template.
Jon said “There’s a feeling in Unforgiven between the kid and Clint that hits the kind of [apprentice/gunslinger] relationship we were interested in.” Althogh he concedes that the Oscar-winning film “is obviously a much darker movie.”
He revealed how one of the most famous novels of all time also influenced their writing.
Jon told EW: “We were talking a lot about Long John Silver and his relationship with the kid in Treasure Island… We wanted it to be a boy’s adventure story, but one in which he encounters characters of dubious intent, and that everyone he would encounter would sort of inform his maturation as an adult.”
Other films mentioned by the Kasdans include Heat, Miller’s Crossing and Gangster No1.
It’s an intriguing list and bodes well for a movie that has struggled to build fan confidence.
