Windows 10 will get AirPod-style, simple Bluetooth pairing in new update

plans to bring a new Bluetooth feature to its Windows 10 operating system that should make pairing third-party devices faster and more convenient.

The pairing process looks to be very similar to that introduced by Apple with its next-generation wireless headphones, AirPods.

Starting with build 17093, beta testers are able to trial the new pairing process.

According to technology blog The Verge, the Surface Precision Mouse is the first device that works with the new streamlined pairing.

When the accessory is ready to pair and placed near a Windows 10 machine, the operating system will summon-up a notification with a Connect button to kickstart the process.

If the peripheral is no longer in pairing mode or is no longer nearby, Windows will remove the notification from the Action Centre menu at the side of the screen.

This should be significantly faster than digging through the settings menu to find the Add A Bluetooth Device item.

Enterprises will also be able to control this feature through any existing Mobile Device Management solution, Microsoft confirmed.

The Redmond-based company also revealed it is working with a number of partners, including Logitech, to ensure this new streamlined process will be available across a number of devices – not just its own in-house hardware.

It’s unclear how long the roll-out is set to take, with Microsoft revealing that “only certain enabled peripherals can trigger this experience” right now.

“We are however looking to standardise this in the long term,” a member of the Windows Bluetooth core team revealed in an official blog post.

The slick new Bluetooth process will be available as part of the next major Windows 10 update, expected to arrive in March or April.
