Han Solo trailer is here: WATCH first look at Alden Ehrenreich in Harrison Ford role

The new teaser trailer unveiled the first 45 seconds official footage during this evening’s US television broadcast of the 52nd Super Bowl.

It had a lot to live up to, following the origin story of one of the most iconic movie characters of all time. It also had to somehow reassure fans after more than 12 months of disturbing stories from the set and the shock firing of original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

So what’d it tell us?

Until now all we had was the official Solo movie synopsis which was released last month to a great fanfare but little fan excitement, since it didn’t exactly reveal anything we didn’t already know.

It said: “Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.”

With all the hype and excitement around the Super Bowl trailer reveal, it should be remembered that this is still only a teaser with the expected main trailer reported to be making its debut on GMA tomorrow morning.

The 45 second teaser shown tonight finally revealed Alden Ehrenreich as the young Solo. Or arther, teased him, since we only saw a very dark, shadowy figure and a back view.

We also saw the first proper look at Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover) and the younger Chewbacca (indistinguishable from the older Chewbacca). Those Wookiees age well, it seems.

Woody Harrison plays Beckett, a criminal and Han’s mentor who presumably leads the ex-soldier down the path towards gambling and smuggling.

There has been much greater secrecy surrounding the three main female roles.

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is swapping Westerns for a galaxy far, far away and plays Kira. Early reports from the set revealed that she was a fiesty, independent character who is likely to fight Han for control of any speeder or spaceship.

Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is shown playing an android, while Thandie Newton is shown as an exotic dancer.

Paul Bethany joined the production late, replacing Michael K Williams, but nothing is oficially known about who or what he is playing, since the original role was motion captured.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out in cinemas on May 25.
