The cultural performance in the North Korea Mount Kumgang territory had been planned for February 4 and was meant to symbolise the recent thaw in relations between the two sides.
But Pyongyang said today it had no choice but to cancel, accusing South Korean media of “insulting” the hermit state over its planned measures for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Seoul said its tyrannical neighbour’s decision to axe the joint performance was “very regrettable”
It comes as South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in’s administration faced a storm of criticism for its response to North Korea’s participation in the Games.
A particular controversial decision to form a combined women’s ice hockey team with athletes from the two Koreas for the Winter Olympics was blasted by commentators and people at large.

Many complained the unified women’s hockey team was unfair to the South Korean players and ore than 100 petitions were launched against the move.
The controversy sent South Korean Jae-in’s overall approval rating below 60 percent for the first time since he took office in May last year.
But the cancellation is a bitter blow to the region, which has seen the two neighbours launching rare talks this month over arrangements for the Olympics.
The two Koreas had been locked in negotiations regarding final details over the joint performance after Kim Jong-un announced he was prepared to talk.
But Pyongyang’s despotic leadership have become incensed by some of the rhetoric in the South recently.
A state media editorial this week accused South Koreans conservatives of being “treacherous”.
Paper Rodong Sinmun blasted: “The south Korean conservatives are a cancer-like being in the way of improvement of the north-south relations, peace and national reunification.
“They are a group of top-class traitors that should be no longer allowed to go at large.
“No matter how desperately they may try to mislead the public opinion, nobody will lend an ear to their trumpeting.”
And retired US Army General Jack Keane warned today Pyongyang could even conduct another missile test during the PyeongChang Games.
