Legend of Zelda news: Link goes Super Mario in new N64 games mash-up

Nintendo games fans all have their own favourite characters which get pretty well catered for by the Japanese games giant.

But sometimes, the fanbase themselves takes things into their own hands and put together their own adventures for Link and Super Mario.

And while many of these projects get closed down by Nintendo, others live on as something completely different.

The latest to catch the eye is one that involves mixing The Legend of Zelda with Mario 64.

Super Zelda 64 is a new mod which essentially adds the controls and characters of Super Mario 64 to the world of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

It’s coming to PC and the is the brainchild of Kaze Emanuar, who recently revealed the project on YouTube.

The new clip includes commentary on how differents parts of the new Legend of Zelda mod will work.

It appears that fans will be able to complete the puzzles and dungeons from the Ocarina of Time, while offering the gameplay and enemies from the Super Mario series.

However, this new mod has also needed to put together a few new mechanics to help with some key gameplay that will be missing.

“Since Mario does not play the ocarina, there needs to be another system to travel fast,” Emanuar reveals during the YouTube video.

“Playing without quick travel would be annoying in a game like this. For this, the fairy fountains have been repurposed to be a warp world.”

It’s a good fix for a big problem, although Super Zelda 64 hasn’t been finished yet and could therefore include some other tweaks and changes.

“Mario 64 x Ocarina of time is shaping up to have around 140 – 150 stars when it’s done. Just finished coding the fairy fountains,” Emanuar told fans on Twitter.

Before adding: “Nevermind about the 140 – 150 guess for Mario x Zelda.

“It’s looking like 150 – 160. 119 Stars are finished and ingame right now. Spirit temple, ganons castle and everything around the gerudos is all that’s missing right now. (+1 shadow temple boss fight).”

Numerous Nintendo 64 classic have been given the mod treatment of late, with a lot of it focused on experimenting with new gameplay elements.

Project taking games online and building first-person perspectives for them have all been shown off in recent weeks.
