Google Chrome just fixed the worst thing about your favourite website, here’s how it works

Chrome’s latest update should bring an end to pestering autoplay videos.

Available on Windows, Mac and Linux, the latest version of Chrome lets users mute grating autoplay videos on websites – forever.

In previous versions of Chrome, users would have to right-click on the tab for the site and hit Mute Tab in the menu.

That would silence any unwanted audio from that webpage, but the effect would be undone as soon as you navigated to another section of the site.

With the new update, Chrome offers a Mute Site option.

This will permanently kill any audio from autoplay videos or elaborate banner ads.

Elsewhere, Chrome 64 brings a bevy of other useful improvements, tweaks and new features.

An improved pop-up blocker will now prevent spammy sites that use links disguised as play buttons, other site controls, or transparent overlays from launched new tabs or windows.

This version of Chrome also brings support for HDR video playback on Windows.

However, you’ll need Windows 10 Fall Creator Update, a HDR-compatible graphics card and display to see the improvement.

Google is rolling-out the new version of Chrome at the moment.

Check that you’re running the latest version of the web browser by hitting the Chrome menu, then tapping About Google Chrome.
