I’m the reason Trump’s HERE: Macron says he made US President come to Davos

The French centrist also confirmed he would be travelling to Washington for an official state visit in the spring, adding that he and his US counterpart have a “strong” relationship.

Mr Macron told the Swiss RTS channel: “I had him on the phone and I strongly recommended him to come to Davos… He’ll be able to explain his strategy for the US, but also be confronted to new ideas and able to take part in debates on multilateralism with other world leaders.

“I’m very attached to my relationship [with Mr Trump], it’s very strong. France and the United States are partners… If we argue with them, we will no longer be able to act.

“I disagree with [Mr Trump’s] approach, but we do agree on most things… France has never built a strategy to change the world without America’s help.”

Asked whether the US president was “dangerous,” 40-year-old Mr Macron said: “I think he can be unpredictable, and that can make people feel insecure, but I have never found him to be incoherent.”

Mr Macron also confirmed reports that his American counterpart had recently invited him to Washington for an official state visit – the first of the Trump administration.

Mr Trump’s invite is a “sign of friendship,” the French centrist said, adding that he would be travelling to the US in April.

Mr Macron, a former economy minister under Socialist president François Hollande, told the world’s leading businessmen and women on Wednesday that “France is back,” before laying out his vision of a new “social compact” for globalisation.

The president said: “France is back at the core of Europe… We will never have French success without European success.”

The French europhile also promoted his radical reform agenda, saying that his recent tax and labour reforms had given the country’s flailing economy an unprecedented boost.

He said: “In France it was forbidden to fail and forbidden to succeed, it reduced your way to manoeuvre. Now it should be more easy to fail and take risks.”

Mr Trump, the first president to attend Davos since Bill Clinton in 2000, for his part, is to meet with a string of world leaders over the course of his visit and host a small dinner for European business executives on Thursday night.
