Barcelona news: Nou Camp legend questions Coutinho and Dembele transfers due to one thing

Including the £80million bonus Lionel Messi received for signing a new contract, Barcelona have now spent close to £350m on forwards alone since the summer following Ousmane Dembele’s arrival in the summer and Coutinho’s move from Liverpool.

But is has been suggested they remain interested in signing Griezmann from Atletico Madrid to further bolster their attacking options.

Reports have claimed Coutinho is seen as a more long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta in midfield, but Griezmann’s potential arrival could cause a selection headache for Ernesto Valverde.

Coutinho is yet to play for Barcelona, but it is believed Luis Suarez, Messi and Dembele would occupy the three attacking positions with the former Liverpool star playing in behind.

But Abidal has questioned the Catalan club’s transfer strategy with a move for Griezmann also in the pipeline.

“If you want Suarez, Messi and Griezmann, why sign Dembele?” Abidal told El Larguero. “There are questions.

“Signing Coutinho means some will have to sit on the bench, that is why I say it is good to sign great players but it depends on the vision of the club.

“In football, the future is more important and it is better to have the best players in your team. Having a player like Griezmann in your team is always an advantage.”

He added: ”[Dembele] is very young and has a lot of talent.

“We are all waiting for him to return to his best.

“I don’t doubt his performances and the work that he will do at the club.

“It is very difficult to change team; the body has to adapt and his diary and nutrition will be different.”
