Mayon volcano eruption in pictures: Lava spreads 3km from crater as thousands evacuate

The alert for the Mayon volcano remains just one notch below the highest level of five as volcanologists observed five episodes of lava fountaining from the summit crater in less than 24 hours.

Lava flows had travelled 3km (2 miles) from the summit crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The lava fountains reached 500-600 metres above the summit crater lasting between seven minutes and more than an hour and generated ash plumes 3 to 5km (2 to 3 miles) above the crater.

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) travelled towards Mii-si and Buyuan and exceeded three miles from the summit crater.

Cedric Daep, a regional disaster-response official said: “If pyroclastic flows hit people, there is no chance for life.”

Phivolcs said: “A total of five tremor events corresponding to lava fountaining episodes of pyroclastic density current or PDC generation from lava collapse, and numerous rockfall events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network.”

Latest photos show a huge column of ash from the Mayon volcano as it continues to erupt and red-hot lava flowing down the slopes of the volcano.

The alert level of the volcano remains at four, which means a hazardous eruption is imminent.

More than 61,000 people have been displaced on Wednesday following the latest eruption and official figures said there were 55,068 residents evacuated to 59 evacuation shelters.

The danger zone around the 2,462-metre volcano has been increased from the Phivolcs-recommended 8km (just under 5 miles) to a radius of 9km (5.5 miles) issued by the provincial government.

The danger zone has been put in place because of the “danger of rockfalls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse”, which could “generate hazardous volcanic flows.”

Schools have been shut in 17 cities and municipalities in Albay and nearby Camarines Sur province, which has been affected by rainfall.

Some 56 international and domestic flights have been cancelled because of the ongoing eruption.

Mayon’s sporadic eruption, which began on January 13, has affected 54 villages in Albay, with a combined population of 71,373 people.
