OnePlus has confirmed its website was targeted by cybercriminals last year.

The hugely-successful Chinese smartphone manufacturer halted payments on its website earlier this month after learning of the attack.

Up to 40,000 people may have been affected by the online attack.

Some customers who entered their credit or debit card information on the payment page at oneplus.net between mid-November 2017 and January 11, 2018 may be affected.

OnePlus has confirmed that hackers may have taken off with credit card numbers, expiry dates and security codes.

OnePlus owners reported fraudulent purchases appearing in their statements after using the card to complete purchases on oneplus.net.

“We immediately began to investigate as a matter of urgency,” the company said.

Following its investigation, the smartphone manufacturer concluded that “a malicious script was injected into the payment page code to sniff out credit card info while it was being entered”.

The malicious script operated intermittently, capturing and sending data directly from the user’s browser.

OnePlus has since eliminated the problematic code.

The company says it has also quarantined the infected server and reinforced all relevant system structures.

OnePlus is sending out emails to those who may have been affected by the hack.

The smartphone maker also recommends customers check their card statements and report any unfamiliar charges.

“They will help you initiate a chargeback and prevent any financial loss,” OnePlus adds.

For those who have any additional questions about the hack, credit card data, and more, should reach out to the OnePlus support team at oneplus.net/support.

OnePlus adds, “We cannot apologise enough for letting something like this happen.

“We are eternally grateful to have such a vigilant and informed community, and it pains us to let you down.

“We are in contact with potentially affected customers. We are working with our providers and local authorities to better address the incident.

“We are also working with our current payment providers to implement a more secure credit card payment method, as well as conducting an in-depth security audit.

“All these measures will help us prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”

The news comes as of the company’s next-generation flagship smartphone, the so-called OnePlus 6.

The all-new smartphone will be unveiled late in Q2 2018, Lau has confirmed.

The Chinese smartphone start-up’s second financial quarter runs from April 1st to June 30th.

If the company is targeting the end of that quarter, we can expect the OnePlus 6 to launch in a similar timeframe to the OnePlus 5 last year.

Elsewhere, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau also confirmed the processor that will power the next-generation handset.

Like the much-rumoured Samsung Galaxy S9, the OnePlus 6 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845.

“Of course, there’s no other choice,” Pete Lau told CNET during the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The OnePlus 6 could also represent a real watershed moment for the Chinese company.

OnePlus wants to nail down distribution deals with the major US carriers, enabling customers to buy the smartphone in-store on monthly contracts.

In the UK, OnePlus uses O2 as its exclusive mobile carrier.

“If the right opportunity and right timing come along, we’ll be very happy to experiment,” Pete Lau told CNET.

It’s unclear how the hugely enthusiastic OnePlus fanbase will react to a broadening of the availability of the exclusive handsets.

Until now, OnePlus has been primarily sold SIM-free via its own website.

This has helped to create a sense of community for those in-the-know about the smartphone brand.
