Liverpool news: I think Emre Can has agreed to join Juventus – Phil Thompson

That is according to Liverpool legend Phil Thompson.

Can has been linked with a move to Juventus for several months as his contract standoff with the Reds continues.

The German international is out of contract in the summer and talks between the two parties are yet to result in a renewal.

And when asked what business, Liverpool should do in January, Thompson claimed Can has already decided to move to Turin.

He told Sky Sports: “The Emre Can situation is a blot on the copybook as I think he has already agreed a move to Juventus.

“Players are running the contracts down to get the big payday, like Sanchez did, and if it drags on beyond January then he is definitely not going to sign a new deal at Liverpool.

He added: “I can’t really see any other business being done as the target has to be signing quality and that is tough to find in the final week of the winter window, unless we could convince Leipzig to let us have Naby Keita early.

“I don’t see that happening, though, but with Adam Lallana getting back to fitness and Virgil van Dijk already signed, Liverpool should still have enough for a top-four finish.”

Despite Thompson’s claims, Juventus general manager Giuseppe Marotta said it was far from certain that Can would join them.

Marotta told Italian outlet Premium Sport: “The interest is clear.

“We want to try and bring him to us, but we cannot do it because he currently has a contract with Liverpool.

“He could renew it and, moreover, there are other teams interested in him.”

He added: “We want to try and bring him to Turin. I am stating this with full awareness that he might not arrive, but we need to have important objectives.”
