Federer has yet to drop a set in his four matches so far this year in Melbourne, beating surprise package Marton Fucsovics on Monday in straight sets.
The Swiss remains favourite to defend his Australian Open title after impressing throughout the first week.
He should be given his toughest test of the tournament by Tomas Berdych though when they meet in the night session on Rod Laver Arena.
His potential opponent will be decided earlier in the day: neither Tennys Sandgren or Hyeon Chung were expected to make it to the second week but one of them will be in a semi-final match on Friday.
