SAG Awards 2018 WINNERS: Gary Oldman, Wonder Woman and Three Billboards victorious

The film categories were dominated by the perceived Academy Awards frontrunners, including Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which scooped three prizes.

The ceremony – which focusses solely on acting – also handed Wonder Woman a prize for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble; and Gary Oldman took home a gong for the UK thanks to his turn in Darkest Hour.

In fact, all four acting favourites for the Oscars – Frances McDormand (Actress), Oldman (Actor), Sam Rockwell (Supporting Actor) and Allison Janney (Supporting Actress) – were championed.

Janney’s performance in I, Tonya won her the latter prize after she was similarly successful at the Golden Globes earlier in the month.

Three Billboards other wins came for Rockwell, and in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast category.

Morgan Freeman took the Life Achievement Award, while the big TV winner was This Is Us – its cast took the Ensemble prize, while Sterling K. Brown won the small-screen prize for Male Actor in a Drama.

The Crown’s Claire Foy took Female Actor in a Drama, while William H Macy won Male Actor in a Comedy for Shameless and Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for Female Actor in a Comedy.

Veep also scooped Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, while Game of Thrones took home Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

In the Television Movie or Miniseries categories, it was Big Little Lies that won out: Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard won Female Actor and Male Actor respectively.

The SAG Awards are usually a much closer indicator of Oscars results than the Golden Globes, and with the Academy Award nominations due tomorrow, it’ll be interesting to see how closely they align.

The BAFTAs is the other big prizegiving bash to keep an eye on – due to take place in February.
