Roger Federer makes big Tomas Berdych claim ahead of Australian Open quarter-final

The world No 2 booked his place in the last eight with a routine victory over Marton Fucsovics.

The Hungarian put up a fight in the second before Roger Federer completed the 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 victory in the final match of the day session.

And he meets Berdych in the next round after beating him in the third last year.

And Federer reckons the 32-year-old Czech will be gunning for him.

“I am sure he wants to make me pay for that one,” said Federer.

“I saw his matches, he is standing up hitting big shots and I am glad he’s back.”

Federer, who controversially played during the day rather than the prime time night slot, looks in top form coming into the second week.

And he insists there is no difference between playing at night and in the day other than the string.

“I was considering sunglasses and a towel for the beach but, no, the only thing is the racket strings are a bit tighter to help control the ball, but it’s not crazy hot today,” he said.

“Other than at I just had to set my alarm at a different time. It’s a different rhythm playing in the day and not going to bed at 3am.

“We might go out for dinner tonight but Mirka has left already – she must have other plans!”
