Mayon volcano update LIVE: Alert level 4 issued – IMMINENT eruption in Philippines warning

8:16am: Danger zone extended from summit

Philippine Insitute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has extended the danger zone around Mount Mayon to 8km (5 miles) after the eruption on Monday rained ash on communities where tens of thousands have fled.

The alert level was previously set at level three – increased tendency to hazardous eruption – and was increased on Monday to level four – hazardous eruption imminent – this means an eruption is possible within hours or datys. 

Professor of Planetary Geosciences at the Open University David Rothery explained a lava dome had been growing at the top of the summit which is formed by lava oozing out and piling up to form the dome.

8:02am: Mount Mayon alert level raised to level four

The alert level has been raised to level four meaning a hazardous eruption would be possible “within days or even hours”. 

The most active volcano in the Philippines rained ash on communities nearby which have been evacuated and a danger zone has been extended to 8km (5 miles) around the volcano.

The eruption on Monday sent a huge ash column of ash high into the sky which has darkened the skies.
