Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool now have a huge problem to contend with – Graeme Souness

sold Coutinho to Barcelona last weekend for a fee of £142million.

The Reds have already spent £75m on Virgil van Dijk, and Jurgen Klopp is desperate to fill the void left behind by Coutinho.

A move to bring forward Naby Keita’s deal remains in the balance.

And Souness thinks Liverpool will find it tough to find players who represent value for money, using Tottenham as a prime example.

“The only problem with the Coutinho fee is that whoever Liverpool approach now will see the pound or euro signs flashing in their heads because they know they are sitting on a pile of cash,” Souness told The Times.

“It will be hard for them to get value for money.

“Tottenham spent the Gareth Bale fee before they sold him to Real Madrid for £85m in 2013.

“They picked the wrong players, Christian Eriksen apart, but that was the correct way round to do it.”

Despite his departure, Souness doesn’t blame Liverpool for cashing in on Coutinho now.

He added: “Liverpool couldn’t keep Coutinho when Barcelona came calling.

“All they could do was delay his departure and get the best possible price.

“When a Latin player has the chance to join one of the big two clubs in Spain, you can put it off for six months or a year, but it will happen.

“They got a fantastic price because there’s no way he’s worth £142m.”
