Liverpool news: Joe Gomez reveals importance of Virgil van Dijk deal

Van Dijk joined Liverpool at the start of the January .

The Dutchman made an immediate impact, scoring the winner on his Anfield debut in the 2-1 FA Cup victory over Everton.

Gomez, who has predominantly played at right-back, would prefer to be at the heart of the defence if given the chance.

The Reds made a statement signing in Van Dijk, as Jurgen Klopp seeks to shore up his backline.

And Gomez only views Van Dijk’s arrival as a positive.

“It’s great for me personally, because he’s one of the best in the world right now, long term if I want to play there then it’s a great opportunity for me to learn and see what he does,” Gomez told the Daily Mirror.

“He’s got great attributes and that’s something I can look at and see what he does from day to day.

“That’s one of the great things from being at a club like this, you are around top players like this.

“He’s a massive presence not just on the pitch, but off it as well.”

Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday (4pm), and will be looking to exact revenge after their 5-0 drubbing in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season.

City are currently unbeaten after 22 league games this term and are 15 points clear at the top of the table.
