Liverpool news: Why Virgil van Dijk would have preferred Chelsea move – pundit

That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit and former West Ham defender Tony Gale.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75million at the beginning of the transfer window.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has admitted he was interested in signing the Dutchman but missed out on him as the Reds made their move.

Manchester City were also interested in Van Dijk, whose fee broke the world record for a defender.

Gale believes Liverpool needed Van Dijk more and does not think missing out on him is a huge blow for Chelsea.

But he reckons the centre-back would have found it easier slotting into Conte’s back three.

“Time will tell but I don’t think (it will be) that costly because I think Chelsea defensively as a unit are pretty solid,” Gale said.

“Yes, the addition of one more would have been good, but I don’t think they were as desperate as Liverpool.

“It’s just the way they play, the way Liverpool play, Man City play.

“Of course Chelsea play with the three at the back and everybody in and around them.

“It’s an easier position to play at Chelsea than it is at Liverpool or Man City.”
