US weather madness: Sea FREEZES OVER in Cape Cod as more frozen sharks wash up

Locals on Old Silver Beach in Cape Cod were able to walk on water after the sea turned to ice close to shore.

Videos of the stunning scene and clips of people walking over the frozen ocean have gone viral in recent days, as northwestern parts of the US wait for the cold snap to end.

The icy conditions in Falmouth, Massachusetts, are uncommon at this time of year, according to harbourmaster Gregg Fraser.

He said: “It’s certainly unusual. We don’t have this much ice this early in the season, typically.

“If you’re standing on the shore, it’s ice as far as you see.”

However, he warned people against venturing out onto the ice.

He said: “We discourage anyone from going on saltwater ice, because it’s unpredictable.”

Meanwhile, four frozen sharks have washed up in Massachusetts as the plummeting temperatures continue to claim lives.

The dead male thresher sharks found on beaches in Cape Cod were all too frozen for researchers to perform immediate post-mortem examinations.

It has emerged that the latest shark carcass was discovered on New Year’s Eve in an ice pack near Wellfeet, towards the northern hook of Cape Cod.

Rough conditions prevented researchers from recovering the body, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) programme director Michelle Wcisel told the Cape Code Times.

Authorities believe all four sharks died from cold shock.

The freezing temperatures have left some US landmarks unrecognisable, with photos showing the iconic Niagara Falls frozen over.

More than 3,000 tons of water flows per second over the falls, but the magical photos appear to show the Horseshoe Falls frozen in time, as they glitter covered in a thick layer of ice and snow.

Icicles hang from the railings around the Falls, and piles of snow gather like cotton.

Many commenters on social media have likened the scenes to something out of Narnia.
