He explained: “Say we live to 80. Well, I thought, I’m halfway there.

“And then, I thought … I’m not going to get there. If I’m like this, I’m not going to make it.”

The changes he made to his diet were cutting out carbs and alcohol, as well as eating fewer calories.

He hopes that his new programme will help people eat well on low-calorie food and avoid bland restrictive diets.

In the programme,  he explained: “If you take something out of someone’s diet that they love, they’re going to hate it and they won’t stick to it.

“When you look at lower-calorie recipes and foods, they’re so boring.

“They’re flavourless, bland and unexciting, and that made me think it’s no wonder people who go on a low-calorie regime think, ‘This isn’t working for me.’”

Kerridge also speaks to others who want to lose weight and what has spurred them on to make the change.

The first episode focuses on comfort eaters, with mother-of-four Leigh Smith trying to change her eating habits.

She explained: “I was so overweight I felt disgusting and really low and that I wasn’t being the best I could be for my kids.

“I went for a run the other day with my six-year-old daughter, who was spurring me on. I feel fantastic.”
