Bright on Netflix: Ratings revealed for Will Smith movie – and they’re surprising

The film received near-unanimous bad reviews from critics, with one even calling it “the worst of 2017”.

Still, that didn’t stop Netflix subscribers from flocking to see it in their millions.

According to Nielsen estimates, first reported by Variety, Bright was seen by 11 million US viewers across its first weekend.

That’s a very strong number – and only slightly less than Stranger Things’ episode one high, which managed 15.8 million in its opening days.

Bright comfortably trounced The Crown, which amassed around 3 million US viewers in its first weekend when season two returned earlier in December.

Nielsen’s estimating methods are unclear, and in fact Netflix spoke out on the Stranger Things numbers to insist they were a long way off.

The company famously never makes its ratings official; a habit shared by the likes of Amazon Prime, too.

Bright is believed to be Netflix’s most expensive venture yet, and is thought to have cost around $100 million to make.

The Will Smith-starring caper – directed by David Ayer – has already been green-lit for a sequel.

Ayer spoke out in awe at one particularly damning review just before Christmas.

Bright is streaming now on Netflix.
