BREAKING: Man dies in fall from balcony as strong winds hit Britain and Europe

The 56-year-old was repairing a window when he lost his balance and fell in the Spanish seaside town of Segur de Calafell, Tarragona.

Emergency services were called at 10.50am local time today and found the man lying in his courtyard.

Despite the efforts of paramedics who battled to save his life, the man was pronounced dead.

The tragedy came as winds caused havoc around the continent.

This morning, emergency services received 539 calls because of the wind.

Fire crews have been called to hundreds of incidents, mainly caused by unstable buildings and structures.

Barcelona has also been placed on alert, with some roads closed off by falling masonry.

The region is being hit by a fierce storm, dubbed Bruno, with 15 areas placed on alert, particularly the Iberian and Balearic Islands.

Waves up to eight metres high and gusts of 100km per hour have been slamming into the coast.

Snowfall is also continuing to affect some parts of the country.

Navarra, Catalonia and the Basque Country have all been placed on orange alert with warnings of raging winds and up to 30cm of snow.

Photos and video published online showed collapsed buildings and fallen trees with huge waves lashing the coastline.

Meanwhile, the UK has also been hit by high winds and snow, leaving thousands of home without power overnight.

The southbound carriageway of the M1 near Lutterworth in Leicestershire was closed after an accident involving a lorry, with Highways England reporting “severe conditions” on the A14 near Kettering, while another HGV jack-knifed in heavy snow on the M5 in Gloucestershire.

Passengers leaving Stansted Airport were left waiting as the runway was closed temporarily to allow safety checks to be carried out.

Elsewhere, travellers at Luton Airport were also warned to expect possible delays due to sleet and snow, with reported delays of over two hours while crews de-iced their plane.
