KANE FOR THE RECORD

12:10: Harry Kane believes it would be “silly” to target a new all-time Premier League goalscoring record so early in his career.

The Tottenham striker equalled Alan Shearer’s Premier League mark of 36 goals in a calendar year, set in 1995, with another hat-trick in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Burnley.

Kane’s fifth hat-trick of the year lifted him to 93 Premier League goals in total, but he has some way to go to match Shearer’s all-time best of 260.

“Of course you dream about it, but I’d be silly to look that far ahead I think,” Kane said. “I’ve still got a long way to go. A lot can happen in football.

“Hopefully I can stay fit, stay sharp and we’ll see what happens. Maybe if I get to 200 and I’ve still got a few more years left then I’ll start thinking about it. But for now I’m concentrating on each game. I’ve had a great 2017 and hopefully, for me, it’s an improved 2018 and I get even better.”

BOXING DAY 1963…

12:00: Boxing Day 1963 saw 66 goals in 10 games, including Manchester United losing 6-1 to Burnley. I’ve just checked the odds, and the Clarets are 250/1 to secure the same result today…

BOXING DAY OMEN

11:55: Spurs are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games played on Boxing Day (W8 D3), since a 0-2 loss at Portsmouth in 2003.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Suggs: As long as we get three points today, I have no real desperation for Harry Kane to beat Alan Shearer’s record. I don’t care who scores. We need the win.

Fakir: James Ward-Prowse and Steven Davis on the bench. Dusan Tadic and Virgil van Dijk out. Austin suspended. Tottenham, over to you for a humiliating win. 5-1.

Thor: Hope we get Ross Barkley next month so Mousa Dembele can go even further down the pecking order. He only does sideways passing anyway!

BREAKING NEWS

11:45: Tony Pulis has been appointed as the new manager of Middlesbrough, the Championship club have announced. What a Boxing Day treat for you Boro supporters…

TEAM NEWS – TOTTENHAM

11:40: Just the two changes for Mauricio Pochettino for today’s festive fixture.

Ben Davies makes way for Danny Rose but Serge Aurier keeps his place ahead of Kieran Trippier, which is obviously devastating for my Fantasy Football team.

Mousa Dembele is back in place of Moussa Sissoko. Harry Winks returns to the bench after recovering from a minor ankle problem.

TEAM NEWS – SOUTHAMPTON

11:35: Looks like Virgil van Dijk is off then, right?

The Dutch international, who’s been linked with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, has been left out of the matchday squad for the second game running.

Elsewhere Mauricio Pellegrino makes four changes from the side which drew against Huddersfield.

Dusan Tadic, James Ward-Prowse and Steven Davis drop to the bench, while Charlie Austin is injured/suspended. In come; Oriel Romeu, Sofiane Boufal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Shane Long.

GOOD MORNING

11:20: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Tottenham vs Southampton from Wembley.

Did everyone have an enjoyable Christmas? Good.

I’m now the lucky owner of an electric toothbrush, although I think that’s my mothers way of criticising my dental hygiene.

I also gained about three stone in one afternoon after demolishing an entire Turkey, trifle and a pack of Guylian chocolates.

My waistline is at breaking point!

Anyway, enough about my belly – let’s get cracking with these terrific set of Boxing Day fixtures!

TOTTENHAM vs SOUTHAMPTON – PREVIEW

Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) and Victor Wanyama (knee) both remain sidelined.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino must decide whether to shuffle his pack but Harry Kane seems certain to start as he chases the one goal he needs to set a new Premier League era scoring record for a single year.

Southampton will be without Charlie Austin, who has been banned by the Football Association for three games for violent conduct.

Ryan Bertrand (hamstring) and Cedric Soares (ankle) are both doubts for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

Last season: Tottenham 2 Southampton 1, Southampton 1 Tottenham 4
