Antonio Conte admits Chelsea’s Premier League challenge is OVER after West Ham defeat

The Chelsea boss has thrown in the towel after just 16 games after another defeat – this time to West Ham at the London Stadium.

They are 11 points behind Manchester City who have a game in hand – against Manchester United tomorrow.

And the Italian insists four defeats is too much to fight back from.

“We have to consider these four games that we lose after 16 games,” Conte said.

“When you lose four games my experience, my previous experience tells me that it’s impossible to fight for the title.

“In 16 games to lose four games it means the target must be another.”

And Conte then went on to claim they were never actually in the title race after a poor start to the season.

“You can only really afford to lose once or twice at the most,” he said.

“But we never started in this race because we began the season with defeat at home to Burnley.

“When you lose to Palace when they are bottom of the league and then lose at West Ham like we did today you cannot be in the title race.”

Conte was seething with his side for failing to open up the relegation battlers.

“When you lose a game you must be disappointed,” he said.

“It is normal. I think today I saw the same game against Manchester City – West Ham.

“Our start was bad but today we played a bit tired. To face one game every two games always with the same players is very difficult. And we have just started this period.

“You have to move the ball quickly. But I repeat, we saw today a bit of tiredness in my players, especially in the last pass, we did a lot of mistakes.

“We must be disappointed. I repeat, we create many chances but were not able to score.

“We have to go and to play game by game, to be focussed. Don’t forget in this league it is very difficult. There are six top teams and four go to Champions League. We have to fight and do our best.”

The Italian is now likely to concentrate on the FA Cup and the Champions League for a route into Europe next season, but refused to say if he would be asking for cash for new players to help him.

“I don’t want to speak about new players,” he added. “It is better for me to talk to the club about that because the final decision is theirs, not mine.”
