At last month’s Brazilian Grand Prix, members of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team were robbed at gunpoint in Sao Paulo and a planned tyre test was scrapped after staff were targeted.
Hamilton tweeted at the time: “Gun shots fired, gun held at one’s head. This is so upsetting to hear. It happens every single year here. F1 and the teams need to do more. No excuse.”
The British driver later added that more needed to be done to keep people safe.
He added: “The frustrating thing is I have been in F1 for 10 years and every year that has happened to someone in the paddock.
“Things should be in place to keep everyone safe. And it’s for the people at the top to take action to keep everyone safe.

And after an FIA World Council meeting in Paris yesterday, it was recommended that the event’s promoter evaluate security and implement a new system for next year’s race.
“The World Council was presented with the report on the security incidents that occurred at this year’s Brazilian Grand Prix which was requested from the Commercial Rights Holder (CRH) by the FIA,” the FIA’s statement read.
“Following the report, the CRH recommended that the promoter, who is responsible for the security of the event, retains an independent security expert to evaluate and advise on security plans, implements a police reporting hub at the circuit and improves overall communication between the promoter security, police and F1 stakeholders.
“The World Council strongly urged the promoter to implement these recommendations and improve the situation ahead of next year’s event.
“The FIA will offer to participate in discussions with the local authorities and closely monitor the situation.”
