Donald Trump visit: Justine Greening slams US President’s plan

She said that an expected visit by the US President Donald Trump at the end of February to open the new US Embassy building was not positive.

Ms Greening was adding her voice to a growing number of attacks over the leader of the UK’s most important ally’s plan to visit the country after he retweeted messages from the far-Right Britain First group.

Speaking on BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show, she added: “I don’t think the tweets over the past week have particularly made such a visit a positive one.”

Critics have warned the backlash threatens to harm Britain’s relations with the US playing into the hands of far-Left politicians like Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

He has previously backed despotic regimes in the old Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela which are responsible for millions of deaths and abuses of human rights.

Independent MEP Janice Atkinson, who will be in the US this week as part of a European Parliamentary delegation involved in meetings with members of Trump’s Cabinet, said that she will personally ensure that the President knows he is welcome in the UK as a guest and ally of the country.

She said: “Trump’s critics, including the Prime Minister, Mayor of London and other politicians, need to get in tune with the wishes of the majority of voters.

“Instead of indulging in verbal battles with our greatest ally they should be spending the time working out effective ways of tackling radical Islam.

“It is perverse that, as we approach the historic moment of re-taking our independence from the EU, our politicians should seek to curb the freedom of the President of our greatest ally to defend our shared values.

“For them also to seek to banish him from our shores is a nothing short of a dereliction of their duty to the voters and to the UK.”

Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage also defended Mr Trump insisting the “liberal elite” had over-reacted. He said the reaction was “out of all proportion” to the offence
