Lewis Hamilton: Jenson Button on whether Mercedes man can catch F1 icon Michael Schumacher

That’s the verdict of the Brit’s former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button, who’s suggested sticking with Mercedes may prove key going forwards.

Hamilton wrapped up the fourth F1 title of his career when Sebastian Vettel failed to finish in the top two at October’s Mexican Grand Prix.

And that championship win moved him level with Ferrari driver Vettel and French great Alain Prost.

Juan Manuel Fangio, on five, and Schumacher, on seven, are the only racers with more F1 titles to their names than Hamilton, Vettel and Prost.

And Button believes Hamilton might catch Schumacher, who’s widely regarded as the best F1 driver of the past 20 years.

“You’ve just got to look at the stats,” explained Button.

“I mean, if we’re going to do stats you’d say that there’s only one person that’s won more world championships [in the modern era] and that’s Michael, Michael Schumacher.

“I don’t think anyone ever thought that a driver would get close to seven world championships.

“Obviously, Lewis is equal with Alain Prost in terms of world championships.

“To win another three is asking a lot, but he’s in a team that are very competitive.

“He’s obviously still young and there is that possibility.”

Hamilton and co. kick off the 2018 campaign in Australia next March.
