Messi remains Barcelona’s talisman but the captain was left out of today’s Copa del Rey clash.
He has scored 16 goals for Barcelona this season, helping the club through a forward crisis with the injuries to Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez.
Messi’s form has not been great, however.
He has not scored for the club in any of his last five appearances.
But that was not the reason for him missing Wednesday’s cup clash.

Why was Lionel Messi dropped?
Dropped is maybe a bit harsh in this respect. Messi was rested from Barcelona vs Real Murcia in order to save himself for the Champions League next week.
That was Barcelona’s official reasoning when previewing the game.
Barca wrote: “Coming off back-to-back road draws in crucial matches—0-0 at Juventus in the UEFA Champions League and 1-1 at Valencia in La Liga – and playing at home with a comfortable lead over Second Division B side Murcia – Wednesday’s match is a perfect opportunity for manager Ernesto Valverde to rest some of his key players.
“So Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Leo Messi, Jordi Alba and Samuel Umtiti all sit this one out.”
When will Lionel Messi be back?
The likelihood is is that Messi will return to Barcelona’s XI for Saturday’s La Liga clash with Celta Vigo at the Nou Camp.
