James Cameron almost HIT Harvey Weinstein with his Oscar in huge public fight

The 1998 and 1999 Oscars were dominated by these two men.

James Cameron triumphed at the 70th Academy Awards with Titanic. The following year Weinstein was riding high with Shakespeare in Love.

Asked recently what he remembers from his victory year, Cameron shocked everyone with his response.

Titanic scooped a record-breaking eleven golden statuettes but the director says the first memory that comes to mind was being dragged away from a huge verbal fight with Weinstein that was about to become physical.

Cameron was being interviewed by this month’s Vanity Fair about the 20th Anniversary plans for Titanic.

He said: “I remember almost getting in a fight with Harvey Weinstein and hitting him with my Oscar. (Many people) would’ve preferred I had played through on that one…

“It was happening on the main floor at the [Oscars]… and the music had started to play to get back in our seats. The people around us were saying, ‘Not here! Not here,’ like it was OK to fight in the parking lot, you know, but it was not OK there when the music was playing, and they were about to go live.”

But what sparked the furious showdown?

Weinstein has been rocked by numerous accusations of sexual abuse and other abusive bullying. It seems Cameron was defending a fellow director who had had an unpleasant experience at the hands of the producer.

He said: “It’s kind of a long story, but it has to do with Guillermo del Toro and how badly he was dealt with by Miramax on Mimic.”

Cameron added: “Harvey came up glad-handing me, talking about how great they were for the artist, and I just read him chapter and verse about how great I thought he was for the artist based on my friend’s experience, and that led to an altercation.”
