Defcon nuclear warning level moved to its SAFEST level despite threat of North Korea

The Defcon Warning System, a private organisation monitoring nuclear threats against the US, is now at level five – the lowest possible.

Just last month it stood at level four as the threat of World War 3 breaking out over from Kim Jong-un’s hermit state remained high.

And despite the lowering of the level, Defcon has warned that less angry rhetoric between Donald Trump and Pyongyang did not mean North Korea’s nuclear ambitions had subsided.

The group warned the situation was still “tense” and the rogue state would eventually seek to launch a new missile, possibly with the potential to hit the US.

It said: “North Korea is still determined to develop its nuclear program, and a lack of major news coming from the region should not lull the public into a false sense of security.

“Most likely North Korea will not test another nuclear weapon until it gets its underground facility repaired.

“In the meantime, North Korea is using the time to placate China in an attempt to drive a wedge between China and the United States over the nuclear issue.

“Be aware of this: North Korea will test another nuclear weapon despite any assurances it is giving to the Chinese behind closed doors.”

It went on: “Japan has agreed that dialogue will not work with North Korea over its nuclear program, but that aggressive action is needed.

“China has stated that it wants North Korea to denuclearize and is increasing sanctions against the country.

“South Korea warns North Korea could develop a missile capable of reaching the United States mainland very soon.

“North Korea states that its nuclear program targets no country other than the United States.”

With so much focus on the sabre-rattling North Koreans, a new crisis has broken out in the Middle East in recent weeks with a fallout between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Defcon cited the escalating diplomatic row as another reason for concern.

It said: “While the tension of the Syria conflict seems to be winding down, at least for the foreseeable future, new heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran – with Lebanon caught in the middle – have led to attention now being focused on those three countries instead of Syria.

“It should be noted that Saudi Arabia supported Syrian rebel forces in the Syrian conflict, while Iran supported the government forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

“Iran has warned that any war in the area would lead to an attack on Israel.”

Tehran stepped up its own rhetoric over missile development this weekend.

The deputy head of the state’s Revolutionary Guards warned Europe that, if it threatens Tehran, they will increase the range of their missiles to above 2,000km.

France has called for an “uncompromising” dialogue with Iran about its ballistic missile programme and a possible negotiation over the issue separate from Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Iran has repeatedly said its missile programme is defensive and not negotiable.
