Ikea recalls 29 million chests and dressers after death of EIGHTH child

Two-year-old Jozef Dudek, from California, died in May when an Ikea Malm dresser toppled over in his bedroom after his father put him down for a nap.

He became the eighth child under the age of three to die after being crushed by an Ikea chest or dresser since 1989, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Ikea first launched a recall of varous types of chests and dressers in June 2016, asking customers either to ensure the furniture is secured to a wall or to send the item back.

But lawyers for the Dudek family said the recall had been “poorly publicised” and “ineffective in getting these defective and unstable dressers out of children’s bedrooms.”

Ikea chief executive Lars Petersson said on Tuesday he wanted to increase awareness of the recall, adding the company had emailed 13 million people about the recall 13 months ago.

He said there had been an ‘extensive” media campaign via Twitter, Facebook, television, newspapers and its own website.

Mr Petersson said he was relaunching the recall campaign “because we think that it’s so important to reach as many people as possible”.

The company is offering full refunds to anyone wishing to return an item, either by visiting a store or calling Ikea to pick up the furniture.

Those wishing to keep their dressers can contact Ikea for a free wall-mounting kit, and the company said crews can be sent to the home to secure them to walls.

Ann Marie Buerkle, chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said Ikea had “worked hard” on the recall and had provided options that “as least burdensome to the consumer as it could be”.

The recall only applies to customers in the US and Canada.

It extends to all Ikea childrens’ chests of drawers and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult equivalents taller than 29.5 inches.

That do not comply with US voluntary industry standards, including an estimated 8 million items under the Malm design.

All products that do not meet voluntary standards have been taken off the market, Mr Petersson added.
