‘EU has treated Brits as SECOND CLASS’ AfD leader BLASTS calls for second Brexit vote

As politicians have repeatedly speculated that Britain would change its mind about leaving the EU in another poll, AfD co-leader Dr Alice Weidel hit back.

She said: “Since Brexit, the EU leadership have treated Britons like a second-class people.

“Another vote would give an even clearer answer against membership of the EU.”

Dr Weidel lashed out after former Families’ Minister Katarina Barley, from the left-wing SPD, said Britain should return to the polls.

She said: “Mrs Barley impressively demonstrates the SPD’s understanding of democracy. What is inconvenient will be made convenient.

“The SPD should get a grip. Unable to recognise the will of a people and to give direct democracy the appreciation it deserves, the SPD has quite rightly lost its status as a People’s Party.

“The question of the acceptance of such a vote is a fundamental one.”

Dr Weidel also on Monday after “Jamaica” coalition talks collapsed after almost two months without a government in Germany.

Germany could be recalled to the polls in the coming months as a re-run of elections could settle key questions that were not answered in the negotiations.

Dr Weidel said: “Merkel is finished. This shows that the AfD works because we prevented a black and green government [with the CDU/CSU and Greens].

“That’s the clear result here, and we’re preparing ourselves to be a rational opposition party in the Bundestag.”

She continued: “We’re looking forward to it, and we’re looking forward to potential snap elections.”

Dr Weidel’s AfD entered the German parliament for the first time following the September 24 election, gaining 94 seats.

The right-wing eurosceptic party grew its platform by making immigration its cornerstone policy.

It believes in Germany controlling its own borders and immigration policies, and has been visited by former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, who campaigned for Brexit on this basis.
