BARBARIC: Woman accused of adultery is caned in Sharia punishment in front of cheering mob

She was one of 10 people beaten in a share in Jantho, Aceh Besar Regency in Indonesia.

The public Sharia beatings took place today in front of smiling guards.

Photos show the woman being dragged to a stage to a hooded “executor” who then proceeds to beat the “adultery”.

Alongside the executor with the cane, another official is seen with a microphone.

Indonesia has been condemned for the attacks in the province, the only part of the country which practices Sharia.

Human Rights Watch last month called on the country’s president to put an end to the “barbaric” beatings.

Aceh, which sees Sharia police patrol the streets, has punished more than 500 people with public canings in the past two years.

Sharia was permitted in the region as part of a peace deal with separatists in 2006.

Non-Muslims have also been punished in the region. Last year a Christian woman was caned for selling alcohol.

In September, also in Aceh, images were released of a woman being lashed 100 times for being in a public place with a man who was not her husband.

That punishment was conducted in front of a baying mob, including children.

It is believed the punishment had to be stopped because of the woman’s screams.

Homosexuality, drinking alcohol and gambling are listed as crimes under the Sharia laws.

Amnesty International has branded the Sharia canings as akin to torture.

In May two gay men were publically caned in Aceh – the first to be punished for homsexual acts in a law introduced in 2015.

The men were beaten by a team of hooded executors in front of a cheering crowd.

A witness to the attack, named as Salman, said afterwards: “It’s horrible, it’s terrifying, it could happen to me.

“I think now I should be more careful about how I behave. My partner is not in Aceh at the moment but I worry about my future.”
