Venus Jupiter conjunction 2017: Watch planets align again TONIGHT in case you missed it

Venus and Jupiter rose above the horizon in the small hours of Monday and could be seen less than 0.3 degrees apart in the UK.

For context, this is little more than half the width of the Moon when viewed from the Earth’s surface.

The planets were visible to the naked eye for about an hour before sunrise this morning and early risers took to Twitter to post their photographs of the phenomenon.

One user said: “Looking up in the sky and seeing the Venus/Jupiter Conjunction this morning made me very emotional.”

But those who missed the conjunction should not despair. The planets are set to rise together again on Tuesday morning.

How to watch the Venus Jupiter conjunction on Tuesday?

Venus and Jupiter will rise again tomorrow morning (November 14), though they will not be quite as close in the sky.

By the time the planets are above the horizon Jupiter will have drifted away from Venus, appearing slightly more than a degree to the upper right of its orbital partner, according to Space.com.

Jupiter will be the first to break the horizon on Tuesday, becoming visible at 6.01am. Venus will follow at 6.05am.

Sunrise does not come until about 7.17am, so those hoping to catch a second glimpse will have about an hour to enjoy the display.

Then on November 16 and 17 a gorgeous waning crescent moon promises to add a final sheen to the breathtaking spectacle.

Venus and Jupiter orbit the Sun more than 416 million miles apart and are two of the brightest planets in the solar system.

However, light from the Sun will likely block Jupiter about quarter of an hour before daybreak.

As with all astronomical events, the conjunction will be best viewed in a rural location away from any light pollution.

Those hoping to catch a second glimpse are advised to find a viewing spot with a clear horizon, preferably on top of a hill or balcony.

What will the viewing conditions be like?

Unfortunately, viewing conditions on Tuesday will not be as clear as this morning.

Skywatchers were treated to clear skies across the UK today, but the Met Office has forecast rain and cloud for many overnight.

On the brightside, it is expected to be much warmer tomorrow.

Met Office forecast for tonight: “Mainly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the north sinking south into central areas.

“Some clear spells and isolated showers across Scotland later. A milder night for all.”

Met Office forecast for Tuesday: “Less cold and rather cloudy in the south with outbreaks of rain or drizzle.

“Drier and brighter in the north with a few showers across northern Scotland.”
