Delhi smog CRISIS: US airline FORCED to stop flights to avoid ‘GAS CHAMBER’ pollution haze

is facing a pollution crisis, with New Dehli immersed in a toxic grey haze that could prove to have deadly effects on the human body.

A shock video, filmed by Al Jazeera, shows Dehli smothered in a “killer” smog, which is ten times worse than the pollution capital of Beijing.

United Airlines was forced to cancel all of its flights to New Delhi because the pollution levels were dangerously high, with the thick haze thought to obscure pilots’ vision.

The US airline cancelled flights to New Delhi on Friday and Saturday following dangerously air quality levels.

An advisory on United’s website said travel to New Delhi was suspended through at least Monday but confirmed they will continue to monitor conditions.

“We are monitoring advisories as the region remains under a public health emergency, and are coordinating with respective government agencies.”

New Delhi pollution levels are believed to be 40 times higher than the World Health Organisation’s recommended safe level.

Pollutions levels in New Dehli have risen to potentially deadly levels, with residents being advised to stay inside and wear masks outside.

New Delhi lung surgeon Arvind Kumar told NDTV that the smog is the worst he has seen during his 35 years in the city.

He said: ”As a doctor, I have no problem saying that the situation today is a public health emergency. If you want to protect people, we should be ordering the evacuation of Delhi. Closing down all schools. Closing down all offices.”

Prashant Saxena, Head of Pulmonology and Critical Care at a New Delhi hospital told Al Jazeera: “This smog is a silent killer. In the years to come, the severe effects of this polluted air in our bodies will reveal its deadly effects.”
