Prince Harry wedding: The Royal rules Harry will follow if he marries Meghan Markle

If Prince Harry, 33, does wed Meghan Markle, 36, there will be a long list of protocol the couple will have to follow.

Being part of the Royal Family means following rules set by the Queen – and despite not yet being engaged, there are rumours Meghan is already making subtle changes to fit in, such as altering what she wears.

A wedding between the pair will be no different, and as the groom, Harry will follow the traditions set by Prince William, Prince Charles and Prince Philip before him.

Military Dress

As a prince, Harry will wear military uniform to wed, as it is tradition for royal grooms to get married in military dress. Prince William chose a dashing red uniform from the Irish Guards – he holds the honorary rank of Colonel – to marry Kate Middleton in 2011.

Wedding Ring

Harry is unlikely to wear a wedding ring once married. Neither Prince Philip or Prince William do, as is the custom among aristocratic men.

But Prince Charles is the exception, as he wore his wedding ring from his marriage to Princess Diana on his little finger even after her death, removing it in early 2005. He now wears a wedding ring again after marrying the Duchess of Cornwall in April 2005.

Stag Do

Like all modern grooms, Prince Harry would have a stag do – but it would be a top secret affair.

Little is known of Prince William’s stag do, although it is rumoured to have taken place at a friend’s country estate outside London. Prince Charles also had a stag before he married Diana, enjoying a night at Whites a gentleman’s club, according to the Telegraph.

Best Man

Bridegrooms in royal weddings traditionally choose a “supporter” instead of a best man, but William broke with tradition and had Harry as his best man in 2011.

It is likely Harry will return the favour when he eventually marries.

Seating Plan

The Royal Family will sit on the right of the church for Harry’s nuptials, which is protocol for weddings if the groom is royalty.

Wedding Cake

Harry and his guests will feast on two cakes. The groom’s cake is traditionally fruit, but William had Chocolate Fridge Cake, his favourite, for his wedding. Harry’s favourite cake flavour is yet to be revealed.

Honeymoon

Harry may follow his brother and have a ‘mini-moon’ before heading off on a proper honeymoon at a later date. Kate and William enjoyed a short break at an undisclosed UK location before enjoying a luxury trip to the Seychelles.

New Name

Harry is likely to be given a new title by the Queen, with the current favourite being the Duke of Sussex. Meghan would become the Duchess of Sussex in this case.
