New York terror: ‘Hero’ officer who stopped attacker says he was ‘just doing his job’

Officer Ryan Nash chased the suspect and shot him in the abdomen after he allegedly drove a truck into pedestrians.

Officer Nash said: “I appreciate the public recognition of the actions of myself and my fellow officers yesterday.

“Although, I feel that we were just doing our job like thousands of officers do everyday.

“I understand the importance of yesterday’s events and the role we played and I am grateful for the recognition we received.”

Eight people were killed and nine injured after a truck drove into pedestrians and cyclists on a bike path in New York.

A suspect emerged from the rented truck after it crashed and appeared to brandish two guns and weave through traffic on foot.

The guns were later confirmed to be fake.

Officer Nash was on routine patrol when Uzbek national Sayfullo Saipov is alleged to have carried out the attack.

In his statement, he said: “I just want to thank my family and friends for their support and all the responding officers who assisted me.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio dubbed the NYPD officer a “hero” for his role in ending the attack.

He said: ”He’s so humble…thought it was all in a day’s work.”

The mayor said we “do not know” what would have happened if Mr Nash had not stopped the suspect.

He continued: “We owe him a debt of gratitude.”

Saipov was taken to hospital for surgery following his arrest and was taken to court in a wheelchair to be charged with terrorism.

The charges could potentially result in a death penalty.

Prosecutors claim Saipov asked to display an ISIS flag on his hospital bed and said “he felt good about what he had done.”
