New York terror attack victims: Five Argentine friends among 8 killed in Halloween horror

Eight people were killed and 11 others injured when suspect Sayfullo Saipov drove the wrong way down a pedestrian and cycle path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed, mowing down several people.

After ploughing into pedestrians he is reported to have screamed “Allahu Akbar”.

Saipov is reportedly from Uzbekistan and travelled to the US in 2010. Officials confirmed it was a terror attack

Argentina’s foreign ministry confirmed five friends had been killed in the attack. They were part of a group of ten friends who were in the city to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their graduation from a polytechnic college in the central city of Rosário, according to local media.

One of the victims, steel firm owner Ariel Erlij, reportedly helped to pay for the trip for his friends.

The men – all reportedly aged 48 or 49 – were named as Diego Enrique Angelini, Alejandro Damian Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernan Ferruch.

Another friend in the group, Martin Ludovico Marro, is still being treated in hospital.

Argentina’s government confirmed the group – all in the class of 1987, had flown to the American city for a school reunion.

On arriving in New York, the group was met by Mr Marron, the man who has been left injured in the attack.

He is now a resident of Newton in Connecticut after moving from Argentina.

On Tuesday, the group had set out on a cycle ride down West Street, which runs along the Hudson River.

Nearing the Stuyvesant High School, this is where the killer struck them.

Mateo Estrémé, Consul General of Argentina to the United Nations, told The New York Post: “We are trying to figure out how to go on – especially the families.

“They are completely lost about, well, being very far from their relatives. They don’t know what to do.”

Speaking of the group who had survived the attack, he said: “They are devastated.

“They are still in shock because they cannot believe that this happened.”

The Argentinian government said Mr Marro “is hospitalised at the Presbyterian Hospital of Manhattan recovering from injuries suffered and is out of danger”.
