Catalonia’s President Carles Puigdemont fled to Brussels after the Attorney General Jose Manuel Maza pressed charges, citing rebellion, sedition and embezzlement.
Catalan citizens have been left frustrated with their leader’s decision to leave the Spain.
Speaking on Channel 4 News, one Catalan resident who voted for Catalonia to become an independent state in the “illegal” referendum last month, branded Mr Puigdemont a “coward”.
She said: “I think he is a coward and he abandoned his people.”
When asked if the woman voted for independence, she said: “Yes, but he is not my President anymore”.

Another resident in Barcelona was more sympathetic towards the Catalan President for his decision to flee the country.
He said: “If he comes here, he goes to prison, so it is not worth it I would say.”
Catalonia has vowed to continue to operate as an autonomous region, despite orders from Madrid to return all of its powers to Spanish Parliament.
Following Catalonia’s decision to unilaterally declare independence, Madrid triggered Article 155 of the Spanish constitution to impose direct rule on the region.
The President, Mr Puigdemont, fled to Belgium and hired a top human rights lawyer after he was warned he could face 30 years in jail for his actions.
Mr Puigdemont is understood to have picked Belgium, which can grant EU nationals political asylum under certain conditions, so he can use it as a ‘safe’ base to force Europe to mediate in the Catalonia crisis.
The Catalan Democratic Party have vowed to continue fighting for independence in the region.
Marta Pascal, a spokesperson for the party, said: “President Puigdemont, and our ministers and our government are our government.
“The charges are there but I think democracy should be our point of reference and we cannot accept what the Attorney general has said.
“We will face these charges but we will always be with the president.”
