In Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at Chelsea, the Italian had a very settled back three which helped them win the Premier League title.
However, with the addition of Champions League football to the schedule, as well as injuries to key men, Conte has not been able to field the same back three on a regular basis.
On some occasions club captain Gary Cahill has switched from right centre-back to left centre-back.
Ferdinand says that during his career he did not want to move out of his natural position as a right centre-back.
He believes Chelsea have lost confidence from Antonio Conte making so many changes at the back this term.

“I hated it. I hated it, I wanted to know where I was playing week in week out,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.
“I played on the right-hand side, Nemanja Vidic played on the left-hand side, same for England.
“I think when you start moving around, I don’t care who you are, how good you are, that can effect your confidence.
“(It is important) especially in today’s game where you’re expected to start attacks on a regular basis.
“If you’re used to coming out on your right foot, I always favoured my right-hand side so I knew passes, I knew my first two, three options.
“On your left-hand side you’ve got to do the same thing on your weaker foot for starters, your body position is all different and you see the game from a totally different perspective.
“That’s before you even think about defending, you’re defending on your weaker side.
“That’s where last season they (Chelsea) kind of had their team mapped out every week and you can gain confidence just from seeing the same people, familiarity around you. That has been different this season.”
