Garoppolo, the Patriots’ 2014 second-round pick, was pivotal for the team when he stepped in for a suspended Tom Brady last season.
There were constant rumours linking him with a trade away in the 2017 offseason but no move materialised.
However, ESPN’s Adam Shefter broke the news that the 49ers had agreed a trade with the Patriots for their back-up quarterback.
He claims trade talks begun Monday morning with talks ending later this evening.
New England will acquire the 49ers’ original second-round pick projected to be around 39-44.
