’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort has been indicted by a federal grand jury on 12 counts including, conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money and violating federal lobbying and banking laws.

The counsel said: “The indictment contains 12 counts: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.”

Who is Paul Manafort?

Manafort is a veteran political consultant and lobbyist who worked on Mr Trump’s presidential campaign between March and August 2016, including a stint as campaign manager.

He has also served as an advisor to former Republican candidates Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr and Bob Dole.

Born in Connecticut in 1949, the 68-year-old graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Science and Business Administration, going on to gain a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law School.

He spent his early working career practicing law in Washington DC, before eventually moving into politics in 1976.

After taking a role on the President Ford Committee, Manafort was the southern coordinator for Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign.

In June 2016, he filled the boots of Mr Trump’s fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, taking control of the Republican candidates election bid.

Manafort did not last long in the role. He resigned in August the same year amid reports he may have received millions in illegal payments from a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.

It was not immediately clear if the charges, some of which go back at least a decade, related to Manafort’s work as campaign manager.

Neither Trump nor his campaign were mentioned in the indictment.
