Hamilton went into tonight’s race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez 66 points clear of closest rival Sebastian Vettel.
And he knew a fourth F1 title would be his if he finished fifth or higher, or the Ferrari man failed to finish in the top two.
Hamilton ultimately ended the race in ninth position but the championship was his after Vettel was unable to get past Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas and finished fourth.
Hill knows all about the joy of securing F1 glory having won the title in 1996.
And, speaking to Sky Sports post-race, he paid tribute to Hamilton.
