Roger Federer has been GOOD for Rafael Nadal: Rivalry and shock claim explained by agent

Federer and Nadal’s rivalry has taken the tennis world by storm for well over a decade, with the pair winning a huge 35 Grand Slams between them.

For years, Nadal seemed to have the upper hand, regularly beating his Swiss counterpart to the French Open and also famously pipping him to the Wimbledon title in 2008.

But, in recent times, Roger Federer has gazumped the 30-year-old, winning the last five matches the two have contested.

However, speaking at the Olympic Committee meeting in Madrid on Thursday, Costa claimed that Nadal has benefitted from his rivalry with the 36-year-old.

“It has been the greatest tennis rivalry, with both them and tennis benefiting from it,” he said.

“Sometimes, there was a Federer-Nadal match almost every Sunday. It made tennis grow in Spain and the sponsors’ interest grow too.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports commentator Mark Petchey thinks Federer is not focused on beating Nadal to No1 spot this year.

“I think Roger Federer has just got the one eye on finishing number one,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s a truly massive goal for him this year given it’s in Rafa’s hands.

“He’s got to play very poorly not to secure it himself.

“It’ll be interesting to see it from Roger’s perspective. This is all about trying to win this tournament.”

Nadal is currently 1,960 points ahead of Federer in the ATP rankings.

But Federer is on course to reduce the deficit, currently competing at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
