Justice League Thunder trailer: Steppenwolf and Batman both try humour – But does it work?

Fans have seen Steppenwolf in previous trailers and at the end of the Batman V Superman movie.

They have heard him as the voice of doom in the previous trailers: “No protectors here. No Lanterns. No Kryptonian. This world will fall, like all the others.”

But this is the first time we see him interact with a terrified victim.

He is an admittedly awe-inspiring sight but do his first on-screen words possibly seem a little too flippant?

Steppenwolf is seen holding up a man who gasps: “Please, we have families.”

In response, Darkseid’s right-hand monster meanie delivers the classic line: “Why does everyone keep telling me that?”

Classic? Really? It seem a little jokey and throwaway for what is potentially our first awe-inspiring moment to see the full might of the main movie villain unleashed.

Sure, he may not understand human love and family but it’s hardly a line befitting a major, iconic intergalactic bad guy.

The new one-minute teaser certainly delivers epic scenes of battle and destruction both in the mythological past and the high-tech alien invasion present.

Yet again, the short clip seems determined to make sure as many characters as possible display their less-serious, quirky and quippy sides. After so much criticism of the overly heavy and gloomy atmosphere of Batman V Superman, the filmmakers are clearly atempting to rebrand the franchise a little.

This time it is Batman’s turn with another Bat-zinger.

A playful Aquaman leaps onto the speeding Batmobile and tells him: You really are out of your mind.”

Batman fires back: “I’m not the one who brought a pitchfork.”  K-pow, indeed.

New director Joss Whedon has always had a way with witty put-downs and banter but maybe it’s Batman’s po face and monotone growl that flatten the punch?

Perhaps they should leave the humour to Wonder Woman and new fan favourite the Flash…
